Screen Image Capture and ProcessingIn the past I had used a very colourful map image for my UI-View map. It had been originally in JPG format and I had transformed it into a PNG file. The size of the PNG image file was, however, still 400kB. For this map I had written a page how to capture and process the image to show a cropped selection with a smaller image file size on my UI-WebServer. This description is available here. However, I finally decided to follow Roger Barker's (G4IDE sk) statement that the best suited map base format is a generic PNG file. My screen map PNG image has now a file size of 100kB. It also turned out that the final transformation into a JPG file I describe is not advantegeous if you start with an original PNG map image. My cropped screen image is now about 40kB and the quality is better than the original JPG solution with 70kB. At the same time I switched my image processing (crop and timestamp) to "on demand/on the fly" with PHP scripts and GD. The basic screen capture is unchanged and my initial page and the step-by-step description behind it are still valid, but IrfanView and UI-Captioner are no more used on my server. If you want to display the captured screen image on your UI-WebServer, you have to add an image tag to the according page, like: If you have comments or questions, please drop me a line. 73 de Gerhard, F5VAG / DL7MW |
